How to Switch Dentists

How to switch dentists

Patients switch dentists for a wide variety of reasons. Sometimes they move to a new and growing area like Hutto, and other times they’ll change dentists because they are looking for a nicer dental facility with more amenities.

No matter the reason ‘why’ people switch dentists, the process is relatively simple.

1. Find a New Dentist

Finding a new dentist is one of those things that sounds easy but is actually harder than you think. That’s because this is your chance to find not just any dentist, but a great dentist! The best dentist for you. One that gets you and can help you with your oral health.

What’s the best way to find a new dentist that checks all of the boxes?

First, get on your computer, pull up Google, and look for dental practices near you. Google is smart enough to know who the top dentists are in your area, and it will create a list for you.

Once you’ve got that list ready to go, start reading the dental practice’s online reviews. There is sure to be a mix of good and bad reviews. Look at the bad reviews and see how the practice responds to them. This will tell you a lot about their character. Read the good reviews and see what people are gushing about. Does this align with your values?

Next, you’ll want to consider dentists’ credentials and expertise carefully. Where did they go to school? What are they really good at? Is this a good fit for you?

While you’re on the dentist’s website, find out if they are accepting new patients. Not all dental offices accept new patients, so it’s important to find out.

Finally, look at the technology and the available services. Dental practices have changed a lot technologically over the years. Dentists who have made a significant technology investment can give more precise diagnoses and gain a more comprehensive understanding of your dental health.

The ideal dentist will check all of the boxes. When you’ve found the perfect choice, then move on to the next step.

2. Notify Your Previous Dentist

Now that you’ve found your new dentist, it’s a nice gesture to let your previous dentist know that you are leaving. It’s not required to do this, but it is polite. If you have specific feedback for the office that will help them serve patients better, feel free to give it. If you’re sad you’re moving, be sure to let them know that as well.

3. Transfer Dental Records

To transfer dental records from your previous dental practice, you’ll need to sign a release form with the new practice. Once the transfer is complete, your new dentist will notify you when the records reach their office. In turn, you’ll be free to book an appointment. The new dentist requires your up-to-date dental records to formulate the right treatment plan for you.

Medical release forms typically outline the transfer process. In addition, they provide permission to the dentist to transfer confidential information. As a legal document, the form also acts as proof of consent.

4. Make Your First Appointment

Once the dental records transfer process is out of the way, you can book your first appointment with the new dentist. The doctor handles your consultation with confidence after receiving the dental records. Medical practitioners typically review your dental history to determine the right course of action. Your new dentist is more likely to conduct several tests to assess your oral health status, including dental x-rays.
